In yet another surprising event this month, a settlement has taken place. A settlement between GOQii and Flipkart.
The case was where GOQii had taken Flipkart to court for selling its product on the platform at prices that were so heavily discounted that they were “being sold at a price lower than the manufacturing cost.”
GOQii had proof that Flipkart had been regulating the price of products on the platform and the heavy discounting to encourage sales had led to troubles for GOQii. The latter had lost its corporate contracts, and consumers were complaining about the product quality and GOQii’s reputation had suffered.
Flipkart had responded to this by saying that they did not control prices over the platform, and the sellers were the ones responsible for the complaints raised by GOQii.
The last hearing on the case was supposed to be held on 6-7th June, however, the date was postponed to 26th June.
It seems that in the meantime, Flipkart and GOQii have arrived at a settlement. It is highly probable that this settlement is monetary in nature, the damage done to GOQii had a monetary value attached to it.
In a tweet expressing his contentment with the settlement Vishal Gondal, CEO of GOQii said:“Flipkart engaged with us in a transparent way and their team worked on a resolution benefitting the brand and the customers. We look forward to a continued fruitful association and help serve millions of Flipkart customers in a better way,” he added in a press statement.
Elaborating on how the settlement has arrived at Adarsh Menon from Flipkart said that they have a zero-tolerance policy on incidents that impact customer trust. In the last few days, they claim to have ensured constant engagement with GOQii to resolve any differences and express happiness around the brand coming back on Flipkart.
With the resolution of this case, it is important that probe into Flipkart’s Press Note 2 violation – the rigging of prices on the platform to increase sales, or to investigate the sale of fake products on the platform does not stop. If these matters are not resolved, another GOQii might come forward, and while another settlement might be on the table, it is the customer that suffers the most in the end, and that is an unacceptable consequence.
