Flipkart targets female buyers during Big Billion Days sale

Intensifying its promotional activity, Indian giant e-tailer Flipkart has planned to reach out to female customers in India during this Diwali’s Big Billion Days sale, which commenced on Wednesday and will run until September 24.

Flipkart claims to have around 100 million registered users and out of which 65 percent are male shoppers. The home-grown e-tailer is planning to expand its reach in tier 2-3 cities to attract more female customers.

Speaking about this year sale event, Smrithi Ravichandran, senior director, Flipkart, said, "This year’s Big Billion Days will be a mixture of growing our repeat customers and also about growing new users in triple digit numbers. Because of the telecom players making inroads into the Tier 2-3 cities and towns, over the past few months, we have seen a huge increase in the number of Tier 2-3 shoppers.”

In order to get more females customers, Flipkart has signed on brand categories of fashion, home, books where women mostly tend to do the transaction in a compare to men.

Of late, Indian housewives are increasingly using social media like Facebook and Whatsapp to take advantage of the e-commerce. As many as 2 million online women resellers are doing the business of various lifestyle and clothing products on these platforms, says a report by consulting firm Zinnov in possession with Entrackr. Online retailers are also eyeing to turn these housewives into its sellers.

These housewives are clocking business worth about $8-9 billion in gross sales, which is projected to grow to anywhere between $48-60 billion in size by 2022.

Top Offers: Amazon Vs Flipkart

In this year festival season, top e-tailers in India like Flipkart and Amazon both are luring customers through their attractive offers.

Flipkart, other than usual offers, has been offering no cost on EMI, product exchange and buyback guarantee among many such offers.  In the Men segment, clothing, watches and sunglasses have up to 80% discounts.  It has also great deals on gadgets and appliances, with flat 30% off on Fossil smartwatches and nearly 50% off on Micromax 50" full HD LED TV.

Smartphones being its most popular segment, the company is giving out some big offers. iPhone 7 32 gb is being given for flat Rs 17,201 off at Rs 38,999, while the iPhone 7 128 gb is being offered for a flat Rs 16,201 off at Rs 59,999.

Flipkart’s arch-rival Amazon too has been running the similar sale scheme titled “The Great Indian Festival”.  It is offering iPhone 7 32 gb at 31% off at Rs 38,999. iPhone 128 gb is for Rs 49,999 at 23% off. At Rs 39,990, one can also bag the BlackBerry KEYone limited edition. The Samsung Galaxy Note 8, which will be released on September 22 is made available with a cashback and exchange offer.

The Seattle-based company has also some exciting offers across categories like electronics, home, kitchen and appliances along with fashion and lifestyle products on its platform.

There will be around 40,000 offers and up to 6,000 products in fashion, home including 500 offers on smartphones, 2,500 offers on electronics, more than 10,000 home and kitchen offers and more than 3,00,000 on clothing with no cost EMI and exchange offer.
