Graphcore, a UK-based AI chipmaker owned by SoftBank, has announced that it will invest £1 billion (around $1.3 billion) in India over the next ten years.

The company plans to set up its first AI Engineering Campus in Bengaluru. This campus will create 500 semiconductor engineering jobs.

In the initial phase, Graphcore will hire 100 engineers. These engineers will focus on areas such as silicon logical design, physical design, verification, characterization, and bring-up. The engineers will develop semiconductor products to support AI applications across sectors including drug discovery, public health, environmental monitoring, and business operations.

The Bengaluru campus will act as a central hub for Graphcore’s AI computing work. Graphcore’s investment comes at a time when India is emerging as a key player in the global AI semiconductor industry.

The company also plans to recruit locally and use India’s engineering talent. The initiative is part of a larger strategy to expand its AI chip production and support AI applications internationally.

This investment is expected to create direct employment and provide training opportunities for engineers in the semiconductor sector. It also positions India as a location for global AI chip development. Graphcore will work on research, product development, and testing at the Bengaluru campus.

The company will coordinate with SoftBank’s global AI operations while managing product design and manufacturing workflows in India. This project marks Graphcore’s first large-scale semiconductor investment in India and is aimed at supporting AI product development and talent growth over the next decade.
