ChatGPT parent OpenAI is all set to open its first India office in New Delhi later this year. The move is aimed at deepening its presence in the firm's second-largest market by user numbers.

The Microsoft-backed company has also started hiring talent for its local team in India, which is an important market for the artificial intelligence (AI) firm. Earlier this week, OpenAI also launched its cheapest monthly plan at $4.60 in India.

According to a Reuters report, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said that opening our first office and building a local team is an important first step in our commitment to make advanced AI more accessible across the country and to build AI for India, and with India.

Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Railways & Information Broadcasting said in a statement "OpenAI’s decision to establish a presence in India reflects the country’s growing leadership in digital innovation and AI adoption. With strong investments in digital public infrastructure, AI talent, and enterprise-scale solutions, India is uniquely positioned to drive the next wave of AI-led transformation."

India is ChatGPT’s second-largest market after the US, with weekly active users growing more than fourfold in the past year. The country also ranks among the top five developer markets globally on the OpenAI platform and has the largest population of students using ChatGPT worldwide.
