The Goods and Service Tax council had its 36th meeting today, and it was announced that GST rates would be slashed on electric vehicles(EVs) and their components starting from Aug 1, 2019.
It was resolved that GST rates on the sale of EVs would be reduced to 5% from the existing 12% and from 18% to 5% on EV chargers. Additionally, GST charged on the hire of electric busses by local bodies will be exempted.
This move comes after EV reforms were pushed in the Union Budget 2019 earlier this month.
