Chinese app Snack Video dominates Google Play’s top chart for two weeks

The ban on 59 apps by the Indian government on June 29 over a border conflict with China had opened up doorways for several other similar apps especially in the short video category. Several homegrown and overseas apps jostled to add download numbers and claim the space vacated by the banned apps.

Among them a Chinese origin apps — Snack Video has received a significant boost since the ban and now dominating the Google Play Store’s top chart in India for the past couple of weeks.

Snack Video has been the number one free app across categories on Google Play Store’s top chart since July 21. As per data intelligence platform Sensor Tower, Snack video has cornered over 23 million downloads in India after the announcement of the ban on Chinese-origin apps including TikTok, Vigo, SHAREit and few others.

It is worth noting that Kuaishou Technology, the developer of Snack Video, had already wrapped up the operations of its now banned short video app Kwai in India.

The Play Store’s top 5 list is mainly dominated by short video platforms and as of August 3, includes four Indian origin apps – MX TakaTak, Josh, Moj and ShareChat. However, none of them has been able to dethrone Snack Video from its position at the top of the list in the past fourteen days.

On July 27, the Indian government had reportedly banned 47 more apps on a similar stand but it appears that Snack wasn’t in the list. The app has received around 8 million download after the latest crackdown on Chinese origin apps.

The lite versions of the banned apps were also receiving heightened attention from creators who uploaded lip-sync and small act videos to showcase their talent, till the government stepped in and blocked the lite versions as well.
