As people across the world have been confined to the comfort of their homes, the popularity of TikTok has skyrocketed. The short-video sharing application has crossed 2 billion downloads across Google Play Store and The App Store.
The Play Store contributed 75.5%(1.5 billion) of the total downloads, while the App Store recorded 24.5% (495.2 million) of the total downloads reported by the Bytedance-owned platform. Notably, TikTok registered over a 50% surge in the number of downloads in the past two weeks.
On April 13, TikTok made a milestone by aggregating 1 billion downloads on Play Store alone.
According to a Sensor Tower report, India has been the biggest driver of TikTok installs, generating 611 million to date or 30.3% of the total. China was ranked second, accumulating 196.6 million to date, or 9.7% of all downloads. At 165 million downloads, the United States is third in line in terms of apps installed.
So far TikTok has generated $456.7 million in revenue, of which $435 million was made from the App Store (iOS) while the remaining $21.4 million was generated from the Play Store. In terms of revenue, China was top-ranked at $331 million, or 72.3% of the total followed by the U.S. and Great Britain with revenue of $86.5 million and $9 million, respectively.
India was not in the list of revenue generators for TikTok even though the company has started monetising in the country over the last 6-8 months. Per the latest data, the company had earned about Rs 23 to 25 crore in revenue in the quarter ending December 2019 from India.
In India, TikTok had launched TikTok Ads to advertise on the Bytedance ecosystem in the country. Besides TikTok, the solution offers inventories for Helo and Vigo Video as well.
