Cricbuzz emerges as second most downloaded news app in world

Times Internet-owned cricket news mobile app Cricbuzz has emerged as the second most downloaded app in the world after Opera News, as per market intelligence firm Sensor Tower second-quarter data in 2019.

Cricbuzz saw over 13 million installs, a 15% increase from last year figure, worldwide during the April and June quarter. The app witnessed the most number of viewers during IPL and the recently concluded World Cup 2019.

Cricbuzz was installed most in India, about 92%, followed by Pakistan with 2.4%. Overall, India also led the countries with the most installs of the app at 59% of total downloads.

According to the CEO of Cricbuzz, the viewership of the app has grown mainly due to innovative show formats and compelling original content.

During the recent World Cup, Cricbuzz claimed to have hosted over 124 million users following each match during the World Cup. Over 42 million users alone tuned in for updates on India-Pak clash.

Two years old app has about 10 times more audience than nearest rival and searched more than even the term cricket, said Chhaprwal.

Among other news apps, Dailyhunt, Toutiao, and Aaj Tak rounded out the top five most installed news apps worldwide for the quarter.

In the last three year, Online video consumptions have grown leaps and bounds especially after the launch of Reliance Jio, which made the data cheaper and removed the entry barrier on the internet.

This has led to the rise in numbers of Internet users in the country. As per an estimate, in the next five years, there will be over billion internet users in India.
