App downloads across devices have witnessed a huge growth in the world in the last two years. In India, alone app downloads have grown around 165 per cent in during the same time, according to App Annie report the State of Mobile 2019.
Time spent in apps flew by 50 per cent in last year in comparison to 2016 figure. According to the report, the average consumer in India has over 68 apps on their smartphone while little over 35 apps were used on a monthly basis in 2018.
While top apps that were downloaded in India included Facebook, Messenger, UC Browser and WhatsApp, in terms of consumer spend Netflix, Tinder, Hotstar, and Vigo Live topped in India.
Youtube was the number one app by time spent in video streaming apps for all markets except China, including worldwide, for 2016, 2017 and 2018. In India, Youtube, Hotstar, and Jio were top apps in terms of time spent.
Among the most used social and communication apps globally, WhatsApp Messenger topped the chart for per user engagement in 2018. In fact, Facebook owned-instant messaging app and Instagram topped as social apps in India.
In foodtech, the time spend on food delivery apps grew twice in India. The growth was largely helped by both fast food apps and the rise of food delivery services. India witnessed a tremendous growth of 900 percent in the online ordering segment.
UberEATS and Zomato, respectively, were the top two food delivery apps by worldwide downloads in 2018.
Mobile shopping also witnessed single-digit growth, 5 per cent. Chinese shoppers outrace both Indian and US shoppers in terms of spending. The report further said that mobile is set to comprise about 75 per cent of total e-commerce transactions by 2021.
Global spending on technologies and services that enable digital transformation will hit nearly $2 trillion by 2022.
Talking about 2019 trends to come, the report said 10 minutes of every hour spent consuming media across TV and internet will come from individuals streaming video on mobile. Total time spent in video streaming apps per device will grow by 110 per cent from 2016 to 2019.
