After hinting of a possible foray into the subscription-based model, online grocery platform Bigbasket is now planning to sell fresh meats and cosmetics on its platform. The move will take the Alibaba-backed company in a head-to-head competition with incumbents in this space such as Licious and Zapperfresh (fresh meat) and Nykaa (in beauty products).
On the lines of its private label for vegetables, staples, and snacks, Bigbasket is planning to create a separate category and deeper supply chain for fresh meats. Until now, the online grocer uses to sell some specific meats under its Fresho private label.
The Bengaluru-based company will leverage its existing supply chain with more focus on meat supply especially for hotels, restaurants, and caterers because of the huge demand.
For beauty products, the Hari Menon-led firm will add more and more private label as well as normal label and imported items too, reports Mint.
BigBasket counts Fresho, Royal, Popular, and Tasties (all private labels) as a major contributor to revenue. As of now, these labels account for 34 per cent in company's revenue. With the addition of fresh meat and beauty products, the company is aiming to generate 45 per cent of revenue by April 2019 from its own brands.
This is the second such announcement for the deep-pocketed company in terms of expansion. In March, this year, Bigbasket announce to go with the subscription-based micro-delivery model. On the lines of Milkbasket, Dailyninja and Supr Daily, the online grocery platform is also looking to tap the offline market via kiosks.
Besides retaining the customers through essential needs, the subscription and offline kiosks will increase the frequency of visits and purchases on the platform.
Meanwhile, the company is in talks with micro delivery startups DailyNinja, RainCan, Supr Daily and Milkbasket for a potential acquisition. Entrackr had exclusively reported that RainCan was closer for acquisition.
Flush with funds, and looking to raise another round, Bigbasket foray into fresh meat and beauty segments will create more competition.
