Reliance Jio, which started services in September 2016, has triggered a tariff war, offering months of free data and charging cheap rates in the country with its 4GQ network.
Jio was on top with 8.3 million users added in January 2018, said TRAI in its subscription data report. Whereas its competitors, Airtel, Vodafone and Idea together added only about 3.3 million in the same period.
The telecom firm is expanding its network by partnering with video and music publishers for some time now. In the past 6-8 months, RIL has acquired stakes in local over-the-top video (OTT) content platform ALTBalaji, Eros and most recently music streaming major Saavn. These investments are indeed a part of group’s long-term strategy of building dominance in the local market quite similar to Verizon and AT&T did in the US market.
