Alibaba mobile business group, a wing of Alibaba Digital Media and Entertainment,has announced Damon Xi as the head of UCWeb for India and Indonesia.
In his new role, Xi will be in charge of the UCWeb ecosystem along with content cooperation within India and Indonesian markets. Prior to this, he was the general manager of UCWeb India, leading strategic alliances and business development for the company in India.
UCWeb is a mobile internet software and services provider, and its main products are UC Browser and UCNews. Powered by Big Data, its news platform has featured channels covering cricket, technology, entertainment, movies, lifestyle, health, humour, etc.
Founded in year 2004, UCWeb was acquired by Alibaba in 2014, in a deal reportedly worth more than $1.9 billion.
UCWeb's flagship product UC Browser (which is available in Hindi, English and Indonesian and compatible with all mainstream operating systems such as Android, iOS, Windows Phone, Symbian, Win CE, Java, MTK, and Blackberry) has over 50 per cent market share in India and Indonesia, which is far ahead of other browsers like Google Chrome and Opera. It is also the sixth most downloaded application on Android platform in India with more than 100 million active users on monthly basis.
Being the hotbed, India and Indonesia have become the most important overseas markets for UCWeb. Now it has translated its platform from the largest mobile browser to leading content distribution since the launch of UCNews
