India dominates global downloads for gaming apps in October

PUBG ban in India has given rise to alternative gaming apps which gained more traction in the past couple of months. Among Us from InnerSloth became the most downloaded mobile game worldwide for October 2020 with approximately 74.8 million installs, shows Sensor Tower data.

India was the top contributor with 15% of overall downloads for Among Us during the month. India grabbed the top spot after dethroning the US, which was the largest contributor to the gaming app in September.

The online multiplayer social deduction game has been dominating the top downloaded gaming apps worldwide since September. PUBG, which was banned by the Indian government on September 2 has not been able to make it to the top 10 list in October.

According to the data intelligence platform Sensor Tower, Subway Surfers from Sybo Games was the second most installed mobile game worldwide last month with 19.8 million installs. The countries with the largest number of Subway Surfers installs were India at 27.3% followed by Brazil at 8%.

Join Clash 3D, Garena Free Fire and Genshin Impact were in the top five list of the most downloaded gaming apps in the world.

Apart from Genshin Impact, which was developed by Shanghai-based company miHoYo, India also dominated the download numbers for Join Clash 3D  and Garena Free Fire in October. India contributed 30% to Join Clash 3D’s total downloads of 19.75 million during the 31 days period whereas Garena Free Fire recorded more than 32% of its total downloads of 19 million from India.

While these apps have been able to gain momentum due to the absence of PUBG, the return of the online multiplayer battle royale game in a new avatar will change the current dynamics. PUBG Corporation is preparing to launch ‘PUBG Mobile India, a new game created specifically for the Indian market.

In addition, the South Korean gaming firm would focus on strengthening the local and invest up to $100 million in the country.
