India top contributor to YouTube Kids and Duolingo’s downloads in July

With a significant shift from the traditional classroom to the online and mobile application led learning amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, the spurt in adoption and downloads of edtech apps from India is quite exceptional. YouTube Kids and Duolingo have recorded their highest number of downloads from India in July, shows a report from data tracking platform Sensor Tower.

Google Classroom was the most downloaded education category app worldwide for July 2020 with more than 14.8 million installs, followed by YouTube Kids and Duolingo recording 9.1 million and 6.2 million downloads during the period, the report said.

For Google Classroom, India was the second-ranked country after Indonesia in terms of downloads with a 20.2% contribution. India led the global chart for YouTube Kids and Duolingo with a 20.7% and 16.2% share respectively of the total downloads in July.

India has been the top contributor to global edtech app downloads in July for the second consecutive month. It was the top contributor in terms of downloads for the top 3 education apps in the month of June as well.

Tips for File Transfer 2020 and Cake were also among the top five most installed education category apps worldwide for the month.

The report also highlighted that among Indian edtech startups, only Vedantu managed to make it to the list of top 10 edtech app downloads across Android and iOS, whereas Byju’s was among the top 10 in the list of educational app downloads on Google Play Store.

While the Indian apps were not able to perform extraordinarily as evident from the report, the segment is otherwise busy making big moves with the many fundraising rounds and M&A deals inked this year.

This year, Byju’s has raked in over $545 million from the likes of Tiger Global, General Atlantic and Mary Meeker’s BOND Capital along with acquiring WhiteHat Jr for $300 million. The decacorn is also in advanced talks to take over DoubtNut.

Unacademy scooped up a $110 million round and went on to acquire PrepLadder, CodeChef and Mastree. Vedantu and Toppr cornered $100 million and nearly $50 million Series D round respectively with ClassPlus too being in advanced talks to raise a $15 million round.
