India dominates downloads for Amazon Prime Video, YouTube and Netflix in June

India was the second-largest hub in terms of downloads for YouTube in June after the US, according to a report by app intelligence and data platform Sensor Tower.

Globally YouTube, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video were the top three downloaded streaming apps respectively in the list.

For YouTube, the contribution from the United States stood at 17.1% while India’s share in total downloads of 25 million was estimated at 11.2%.

According to the report, the download numbers for Apple apps and Google pre-installed apps are excluded, and Android estimates do not include third-party stores. However, the download numbers for YouTube looks a bit off as most Android and iOS-enabled devices come with YouTube inbuilt.

Entrackr has sent queries to Sensor Tower and we will update the story once they respond.

During the period, India was the third biggest market with 8.3% market share in number of downloads for Netflix whereas the US and Brazil accounted for 16.3% and 11.5% of overall downloads in June, which was 20.8 million.

India grabbed the pole position for Amazon Prime Video downloads with 29.5% market share in 13.5 million worldwide downloads in June. The contribution of Brazil and the US was recorded at 15.4% and 12.9% respectively.

As compared to the previous month, the top five list, which also includes YouTube Kids and Twitch, remained unchanged in June.

ZEE5 is the only homegrown player among the top 10 downloaded streaming apps across the world in June. The Essel Group-owned app was ranked 9th in terms of overall downloads on the App Store and Google Play worldwide between June 1, 2019 and June 30, 2020. If we consider Google Play Store data, ZEE5 was ranked 6th during the month.

India remained on top with 3.95 million downloads of overall 4.16 million downloads for ZEE5. As far as lifetime installs, it has around 118 million downloads in which India, Pakistan and United Arab Emirates have a market share of more than 96%.

The OTT platform, which competes with MX Player and ALTBalaji in India, had also entered the short video entertainment space with HiPi to provide long-form and short-form content at one place.
