India emerged as the largest contributor to PUBG downloads in May

As Indians had to confine themselves to their homes, many have turned to online games leading to a spike in app downloads and usage. India surfaced as the largest contributor in terms of the number of downloads for PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) — one of the most famous and highest revenue-generating gaming apps across the globe.

The Tencent-owned online multiplayer battle royale game had garnered 34.2 million downloads in May of which India accounted for 35.8% or 12.24 million installs, followed by Brazil with 7.2% contribution, according to Sensor Tower data, a platform that provides market intelligence and analytics for mobile apps.

It is worth noting that PUBG was the second most downloaded gaming app worldwide in May after Crazy Labs-owned ASMR Slicing. PUBG replaced Playrix-owned Gradenscapes, which was at the second spot in top installed gaming apps in April. During this period, the country with the largest number of Gardenscapes installs was India at 22.7%, followed by the U.S. at 6.2%.

As far as revenue is concerned, PUBG has been the top-grossing app across the world since September 2019. Last month, it recorded $226 million in revenue in which China is the largest shareholder followed by the US.

The report, however, did not provide the revenue figures that PUBG generated from India.

India’s Ludo King was ranked sixth and it was the only firm from the country to make it to the list of top 10 downloaded gaming apps. In April, the Vikash Jaiswal-led firm was ranked fifth and amassed 26.8 million downloads.

While the top 10 list of most downloaded gaming apps in the world has only one app from India, the country has been experiencing a spike in the usages of games and it may lead the download and engagement numbers of gaming apps for the rest of the year.
