Flipkart to resume its grocery service Supermart

To fulfil the surge in demand for grocery and daily essentials, e-commerce major Flipkart is likely to resume its grocery platform Supermart.

Although Flipkart and its grocery verticals have halted their operations temporarily, the company is confident to come back as soon as the central government provides clarification on the ongoing matter.

According to an ET report, Flipkart will first kick off deliveries of food and other essentials in Bengaluru, followed by Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Delhi NCR.

Before going off, Supermart has been operational in the cities mentioned above from the past few months.

“Though various centre level communications have qualified e-commerce as essential, in the ground the local administrations have shut e-commerce deliveries down,” said a person aware of the matter, requesting anonymity.

“Supermart has also been restricted but Flipkart is sorting out permit situations at the local level”, he added.

E-commerce, online groceries, as well as food tech platforms, have already complained that in some places, local authorities don’t understand the definition of essential service mentioned in government notification. In some areas, local administration doesn’t know how to give them curfew permits to deliver groceries and other essential items to homes.

Meanwhile, Flipkart is working with various state governments to allow them to deliver on the basis of essential services. Today, the commissioner of Gurugram directed all officials to enable Flipkart, Amazon, Swiggy, Zomato, Bigbasket, Grofers and others to continue their operations.

After facing harassments and hindrance during the lockdown, these firms believe that it will take time to complete all the paperwork for smooth deliveries to restart. These platforms already have several days worth backlogged orders.
