After facing regulatory heat from Indian Govt, TikTok removes 60 lakh videos

Bytedance-owned popular short video app TikTok has removed 60 lakh video clips, which were responsible for violating content protocol in India.

TikTok deleted these videos in order to weed out illegitimate and coarse content present on its platform. The firm is also working towards strengthening the mechanism that guards the platform against the transit of improper and unlawful content.

We have made sure that they are fully committed to maintaining a safe and positive in-app domain for the users showcasing their creativity and talent,  Sachin Sharma, Director (Sales and Partnership) of the India operations told ET.

TikTok in no way is commending or promoting content that is in violation of our community guidelines, Sharma added.

The company further said that to check the content on the platform, which is either harmful or inappropriate for children and other users or is promoting any type of nudity or sexual activity.

The development has come at a time when the app recently received a warning threat from the government last week about obscene activities and was asked to provide responses to the set of 24 given questions.

Ever since its launch in India, the social video app has registered significant growth. TikTok which is having around 500 million users worldwide and over 200 million in India was banned for four weeks, earlier in April.

Facing heat for its content promoting nudity and cyberbullying, this Chinese video app also received a warning for a potential ban from Ministry of Electronics and IT if the company fails to provide reasonable answers to govt’s queries after the complaints filed by Swadeshi Jagran Manch about anti-national activity on the social app, as per reports circulated last week. 

ByteDance on Sunday also confirmed about establishing a data center in India to locally store information of the users.
