Website and mobile testing platform BrowserStack has raised massive $50 million in Series A round from Accel Partners. This is the first round of funding for the Mumbai-based company, which reportedly diluted a minority stake for the aforementioned amount.

Following the round, Accel Partner Ryan Sweeney will join BrowserStack board as director. The company is also planning to open American headquarter in San Francisco.

This is the largest Series A round ever raised by an Indian startup. In September last year, online only insurance company Acko General Insurance had bagged $30 million in seed round from multiple investors.

The proceeds will primarily be deployed towards sprucing up testing infrastructure suite and expanding enterprise capabilities. The company also emphasizes to use funds for expansion in North America.

The company also roped in ex Google India MD Shailesh Rao as Chief Operating Officer (COO). Shailesh will be based out of San Francisco and lead BrowserStack operations in the US.

BrowserStack enables developers to test if their website is working properly across different browsers or not. It lets developers test products on a range of physical Android and iOS mobile devices and tablets.

The platform provides over 1,100 desktop browsers including the latest version of IE, Edge, Safari, Chrome, Firefox and several others.

The six-year-old company is profitable and claims to have 1.6 million registered developers on the platform. According to its website, it has over 35,000 paying customers including Microsoft, Bose, Wikimedia, and RBS.

BrowserStack offers a subscription-based product for which clients can pay monthly or annually, starting from $29 a month. Last year, it had partnered with Microsoft to enable developers to test their software on the Edge browser. Besides, it also has a partnership with Chrome and Firefox.

BrowserStack competes with European and US counterparts including heavily funded Sauce Labs, Browsera, TestingBot and Browsershots among a few others. It claims to have no competitor in India.
