Tata Motors is going to introduce Nano Electric cars in Delhi in collaboration with Ola Cabs which will add the electric cars to its taxi fleet in the national capital by this month, however, the car will not be completely manufactured by Tata Motors.

The order for the new electric car is reportedly in the pipeline. Ola will deploy 400 Tata Nano Electric cabs in the initial stages, reported Financial Express.

According to an Autocar report, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is to inaugurate the Tata Nano Electric under a new name — the Jayem Neo for Ola Cabs on November 28.

Tata has a limited role in the Nano’s comeback. According to the report, Tata Motors will only supply complete Nano body shells to Coimbatore-based Jayem Automotives. These shells will be supplied sans the engine and transmission.

Subsequently, the report adds, Jayem will manufacture and market the EV. In fact, this version of the Neo will not carry the Tata badge.

Jayem Neo’s powertrain will be sourced from Electra EV, a prominent brand in design development and supply of electric powertrains, battery packs and charging infrastructure. The Neo will be powered by a 48-Volt system and 17kW (23hp).

While a standard Tata Nano weighs 636 kg, the electric Nano or Neo will weigh in at 800 kg, but 17kW of power is said to be powerful enough for it.

Tata Motors formed a 50:50 joint venture (JV) with Jayem for developing special performance vehicles. According to agency reports, the JV firm, JT Special Vehicles, will develop a range of performance vehicles in a phased manner at a dedicated line, which was being explored at Coimbatore.

In September, Tata Motors has won the first government contract for supplying 10,000 electric variants of the Tigor, its sedan car outbidding Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) in the contest for the Rs 1,120 crore order.

The company has been working on electric car technology through its UK-based Tata Motors European Technical Centre (TMETC) where it developed the Bolt EV and disclosed the Tiago EV last month according to Autocar India.

Tiago electric car is powered by an 85kW motor that offers 200Nm torque and a range of around 100km.
